New museum at Appomattox

Wilmer McLean home (replica), site of surrender meeting between Generals Robert E. Lee and Ulysses Grant.

Today is the anniversary of Appomattox, the major surrender that brought the end of the American Civil War. Here’s a post I wrote about a visit I made there.

The Museum of the Confederacy just opened a new satellite museum in Appomattox. Here’s the article about the museum from the Washington Post: http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/lees-surrender-sword-and-echoes-of-the-lost-cause-at-new-appomattox-museum/2012/03/28/gIQAwedVlS_story.html

If you are looking for a good book about the final month of the Civil War, I highly recommend April 1865 by Jay Winik.
